We know that the amount spent (y) equals 5 dollars per hour, plus 3 dollars for laces and socks. Since they tell us that we spent 18 dollars (y=18), all we have to do is get the value of x (hours rented)
y=5x+3
We substitute 18 for y, so
18=5x+3
We now substract 3 on each side of the equation, so
18-3=5x+3-3 or,
15=5x
We now divide each side by 5 to leave the x alone, so
15/5 = 5x/5, or
3=x
The answer is 3. For 18 dollars, we can rent the skates for 3 hours.
Verify the problem by substituting the values we find:
y = 5x+3
18 = 5(3) +3
18 = 15 + 3
18 = 18.

Now we plot a graph (which I do not know how to plot here)
but, you know, x versus y type of graph and plot the values.
