I have a dog named April.. She's is two years old and is a Pure yellow lab . So i was wondering how would i train her to walk side to side with my rather than run or try to run ahead while on a leash. She was probably trained to walk ahead since, i usually took her out with my roller blades in the past, but now it's really irritating to have to always pull on her collar or like using my muscles the entire walk. I rather have her stay side by side or refrain from pulling so much. Btw she is super energetic and goes out about 3 times a day for at least 40 minutes a trip.
How do you make your dog walk side to side with you?
well a gentle leader would help. its the thing that kinda looks like a muzzle but its not so dont worry. She wont like it but she will get used to it. Anyway or you can carry treats with you and hold them in you hold them in your hand next to the side. It will take time and practice. oh and always praise her when she is listening to you.
Reply:well i got something called a Sense-ation Collar. its actually a special kind of harness that keeps the dog from pulling. you can check it out here! it really works!

oh and i would also beware of a Gentel leader..i had one before my harness and it upset my dog and eventually led to an eye problem. you can also check out this website for pros and cons of the two products. just so you can decide for yourself.

Reply:get head halter for the pulling and just train her to walk beside instead of ahead.
tell her heel or whatever command word you want and pull her to side when she gets ahead. relax the leash when she is where you want her.
Reply:have her on your left side and keep her lead in your right hand. with your left hand also on the lead, you can control her and tug her to stop and follow commands like heel and sit
Reply:Try holding treats at your side. I haven't tried it yet but I read it in a book I bought on puppy training. Sounds like a good idea to me!
Reply:i would love to help!
